In simple terms, engineering is the process of applying scientific and mathematical methods to design and build things. These things range from the smallest microchip to the largest space shuttle. What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineers are responsible for the design, construction, and use of machines in transportation, manufacturing, and construction. These machines range from small appliances like inkjet nozzles to full scale mechanical systems in automobiles. Present since the Industrial Revolution in Europe, mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most prominent disciplines of engineering. You can opt to specialise in areas such as aerospace, manufacturing, mechatronics, packaging and automotive engineering, among others.

Subjects in a Mechanical Engineering Course

Most engineering degrees take four years to complete. Usually, the first two semesters of a mechanical engineering course introduce more advanced science and mathematical subjects such as calculus for engineers and thermodynamics. The remaining semesters will then cover subjects that are specific to mechanical engineering.

These subjects include dynamics of mechanical systems, materials design, robotics, combustion processes, and computer modelling techniques. Students
will learn the complex mathematical theories, fundamentals of mechanics, and learning how to use computer software to design machines. These skills will then be applied in a final project either done individually or in a group. After finishing a degree in mechanical engineering, graduates can start joining the
workforce and continue their training to become a professional engineer.

To become a professional engineer, graduates need to be registered as a Graduate Engineer with the Board of Engineers, obtain the necessary work experience, professional training, and pass the Professional Assessment Examination conducted by the Board. The Skills You Need

To excel as a mechanical engineer, a strong interest and proficiency in mathematics and science are essential. Those skills are needed when creating accurate machinery and solving any problems that might appear in the future. Also, creative individuals have an advantage as mechanical engineers are in
charge of designing a product from scratch. Next, mechanical engineers need to be patient, determined, and unfazed by failure. Other useful skills include excellent control of analytical tools, strong IT skills, being able to work in a team, and being able to think quickly and practically.

Job Opportunities

As mechanical engineering is such a broad field, there are a variety of career paths for graduates to explore. Mechanical engineers may find employment in
automotive or aerospace industries, biotechnology companies, energy conversion companies, environmental control bodies, and manufacturing. In those industries, mechanical engineers have to be familiar with the forces and thermal surroundings of a product, its parts and subsystems, as well as creating a product design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Those who have engineering degrees may also consider employment in non-engineering
sectors such as law, management, finance, and law, as they possess valuable analytical and problem-solving skills.
