Engineering - Early Childhood Education

No matter how many disagreements learned thinkers have about education, one thing is clear – early years are the most formative, and those who teach children are responsible for moulding the generation of tomorrow.

There are many pathways for those with a passion for working with children, but one of the most satisfying can be entering the education system and getting involved with children’s development at the very beginning of their life journey.

Early Childhood Education (ECE) is the ‘fun’ part of education and involves nurturing a child’s learning from birth to eight years. A job in early years education is about inspiring children before compulsory education begins through play and other interactions to start the process of introducing children to the world around them.

It goes without saying that anyone considering a career in early childhood education will need patience, boundless energy, a love for children and lots of creativity, but if you have the passion, the role will never be anything more than a pleasure.

Those who choose to study this course should look carefully at the myriad options and pathways available within the broad scope of early childhood education, with courses varying by duration, content, focus area and qualification earned upon completion.

Studying ECE

Diplomas are usually one- to two-year courses, while degrees will last three years and a Master’s one or two years. As there are many providers of early childhood education, do ensure their qualifications are recognised and accredited by relevant governing and regulatory bodies.

Course content can vary depending on the age focus – zero to five years, or three to seven years are the most common – but offer an introduction to teaching young children by combining basic educational theory with psychology, pedagogy, sociology and philosophy. Students learn the best methods for working with young minds but also why these methods work, giving would-be educators an understanding of the way in which children accumulate knowledge. They will learn how to teach reading, writing and basic arithmetic; and understand issues such as health, safety and nutrition for children.

Courses will also include modules that enhance a student’s skills in areas such as communication, leadership, teamwork and presentation. Some courses also include modules to prepare graduates to start and manage their own centres.

Some courses will involve a placement or attachment with preschools or practical sessions with children, giving students the chance to put their knowledge into practice and get a taste of the reality of the job. While placements can be hard work and often involve continuous assessment, these are great ways of gaining experience and enhancing the CV.

Careers in ECE

Many students on early childhood education courses proceed into jobs as teachers or principals in schools, childcare centres and kindergartens. Some become entrepreneurs and begin their own preschool, tuition or learning centres. There are also career options within social care, charities, parental advice organisations, child-minding, or even roles within local government organisations for those not keen to enter the classroom. Some continue with postgraduate qualifications and teach at colleges and universities offering early childhood education.

If you are considering a career in early childhood education then a good course is the ideal starting point, try to get some experience in a school or kindergarten before you commit to a course to see if you really have the patience and the passion for the intense – and responsible – world of educating children in their early years.
