Art & Design - Courses in Design

Courses in Design

Besides graphic design, there are other design courses as well for creative minds.

More students are pursuing design courses now as designers are increasingly being recognised and respected as professional individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to create attractive and functional works of art.

Graphic design

A graphic design course gives you the knowledge and skills to express your ideas visually. You will learn to make use of various design elements such as typography, textures, images, lines and colours. The use of computer software such as InDesign is also an important part of your course. Graphic design graduates work in diverse areas including advertising, publishing, and web using different types of media. Graphic designers usually have a diploma or degree in graphic design.

Games design and development

A course in games design and development will give you the knowledge and skills to design and develop games for web, mobile devices and games consoles. You will study human computer interaction, multimedia and internet development, web and mobile development, mobile application development, and you will learn important programming languages. A games designer will develop the outlines and specifications for a game that include the storyline or plot, interface and sound. A games designer works in a team that includes graphic designers, writers, programmers and a project manager.

Animation

A course in animation (or digital animation) equips students with the skills and knowledge to investigate, analyse and present visual information, and to interpret briefs related to animation. Students will study 2D and 3D animation, pre- and post-production, storyboarding, life drawing, motion capture, 3D modelling and illustration among others.

Animation graduates work in animation and post production companies, and in broadcasting, film, television, and games development.

Interior design

Interior designers are concerned with how to make use of interior spaces for people to live, work or play in. They design the interior spaces of any type of building from homes and offices to hotels and hospitals. They may also be involved in exhibition design, concerts and theatre design. In addition to decorations, choice of furniture, lighting and fittings, interior designers have knowledge in construction and architecture. Interior designers work closely with civil and structural engineers, architects and contractors in large building projects. Students in an interior design course will study perspectives in art history, architectural drafting, perspective drawing, and learn essential digital software.
