Careers in Computer Science

In an age of rapid technology development, it is no surprise that there is a growing need for computer science degree holders  along with a healthy increase in salaries for ICT professionals. The following details the main career fields in computer science.

Computer Scientist
Terms like Java, C++, C#, SQL, PHP might seem unfamiliar to most, but these are actually essential programming languages that a computer scientist should know. Computer scientists develop and design hardware and software for personal and business use. From smartphone apps and desktop browsers, to the developing field of virtual reality, these are all products of research and development by computer scientists. One industry that has been rapidly progressing in recent years is the development of mobile applications, or apps. With one of the highest smartphone and Internet penetration rates in Southeast Asia, the mobile market in the world is growing at a rapid rate, along with use of apps. This development has opened up a whole new world of employment and start-up opportunities.

System Analyst
Companies, especially large enterprises and multinational organisations, depend on the efficiency of their computer systems to function. System analysts solve computer problems and establish computer technologies. This enables organisations to perform their core tasks efficiently. Typically, system analyst firms work with organisations to identify issues, create solution plans and execute them systematically. A big part of a system analyst’s role is to also educate the client on how to use them through training sessions. Another core function of these systems is secure communication and networking between different departments or countries. Additionally, with more and more transactions becoming digital, cyber-security today is essential to protect databases and user information. System analysts can find career opportunities in a wide range of industries, thanks to our rapid globalisation and internationalisation of businesses.

Database Administrator
The amount of data being stored and used in today’s businesses has gone from kilobytes to exabytes. A natural progression, looking at the way Internet-based services has become a part of our daily lives. This is where database administrators enter. They make it possible for large amounts of information to be organised and be easily accessed, while keeping them safe from hackers and crashes. At the same time, they design, implement and maintain security measures as well as create backup systems to protect sensitive data.
There is tremendous growth in cloud computing and mobile applications. In the business context, the specific jobs that will see much growth are IT security analysts and big data analysts. Be warned, though – a career in computer science will most likely involve long hours on the computer. You should consider careers in computer science if you like working on computers to create systems, solve problems or manage data.
